Exploratory Electronic Voice Phenomenon Study Conducted by Ali M. and Sharon H
We have begun an exploratory study that will examine the conditions under which Electronic Voice Phenomenon (EVP) is obtained. The study will address, among other things, the type of EVP that is recorded and the method used to record it. In order to classify the quality of the EVP, we will start by using the guidelines set forth by the American Association of Electronic Voice Phenomena. Given the nature of EVP, the final definition of the concepts of the study will come as this exploratory research project gradually gathers data. As a starting point, we will begin with the preliminary observation that EVP can- at times -appear to be interactive. How often this occurs, under what environmental conditions this occurs, and the method most often used to obtain this seemingly interactive result, are some of the questions we will attempt to address. Since most EVP is captured when the spirits are invited to speak, we will also begin by using a questionnaire that is designed to illicit an interactive EVP. Some of the questions have been formulated to encourage the spirits to share specifics about the after-life. During each recording session, we will collect and document all environmental conditions. As the information we gather leads to the defining of the parameters of this exploratory study, we will address the task of cutting away any unnecessary data. We invite you to come along with us on this journey of exploration. Clearly, taking into account the apparent infrequency of EVP recordings, this may also prove to be a longitudinal study. In any event, we will update our findings as the data warrants. Questions and comments may be sent to EVPStudy@tsprghosts.com 8/27/05 Update by Ali M. Findings and possible changes in format for this study are a long way off, but I thought I would make a few comments none the less. In order to classify the quality of EVP, we currently use the American Association of Electronic Voice Phenomena’s classification system, which uses this simple method of categorization: Class A – clearly heard and understood by the average person when heard over speakers. Class B – usually requires headphones, but sometimes heard over speakers, and understood by most people. Class C - poorly heard, even with headphones; probably not understood by most listeners. In the relatively short time since we began our EVP study, we have obtained seven interactive, class “A” EVPS, one class “B” EVP, as well as two seemingly random, class “C” EVPS. We have also gotten a number of utterances that may be attempts at communication. Here’s a breakdown of some of what we’ve gotten: 5/12/05 – I Captured a Class “B” interactive EVP in a cemetery in Ogdensburg NJ. This one gave me a laugh when I heard it. I announced that I had to leave because my knees were bothering me, and the recorded voice says, “I went to the doctor for that.” *6/18/05 - While on an investigation of a haunted house as guests of another paranormal group, I obtained five Class “A” interactive EVPS, four of which occurred within a one minute, fifty-eight second span of time. They were quite interactive; two were actually conversational in tone. Two were less friendly and a bit demanding. The fifth simply said my name, “Ali.” *7/09/05 – While on an investigation of the Battleship New Jersey as guests of another paranormal group, I obtained two more interactive EVPS. The first was a voice that said, “Hello” as I entered a room. The second was in response to my asking for the name of anyone who was present. The recorded voice gave his name and military rank. As yet, no EVPS have been obtained while using our questionnaire, nor have we noted any significant environmental correlations. Check back for future updates! * No further information can be shared with regard to this evidence.
