Representatives from TSPR: Ali, Sharon, Sue Paranormal History: In March of 2007, we had the pleasure of attending a paranormal retreat at the magnificent Stanley Hotel. This hotel was the inspiration for the fictional Overlook Hotel in Stephen King's novel "The Shining". While he and his wife were staying at the Stanley, King conceived the basic idea for the novel. The 1997 television miniseries version of The Shining was filmed at the Stanley. The Stanley's haunted reputation is well known. The hotel's original owners, F.O. and Flora Stanley, are said to haunt the hotel. It has been reported that Mrs. Stanley plays the piano in the music room, and frequents the billards room as well as the lobby. There are also several other rooms in the hotel that have been reported to be particularly haunted. One is Room 407, which is said to sometimes be occupied by Lord Dunraven, who owned the land prior to F.O. Stanley. Reportedly, he likes to stand in the corner of the room near the bathroom door, as well as look out the window. The lights in the bathroom also seem to have a mind of their own, they will turn on and off for no reason. Room 418 gets the most reports of haunting activity apparently from children’s spirits. Cleaning crews report having heard many strange noises from the room, as well as seeing impressions on the bed when the room has been empty. When guests stay in the room, they often report that they hear children playing in the hallway at night. One couple reportedly checked out of the hotel very early in the morning, complaining that the children in the hallway kept them up all night. However, there were no children booked in the hotel at the time. Reportedly, Steven King also saw the child, who was calling out to his nanny on the second floor. Other past employees report footsteps and apparitions seen throughout the building. There have also been many reports by guests of haunting activities in Rooms 217 (which is where Steven King stayed). TAPS filmed an episode of Ghost Hunters at the Stanley and one of the most compelling pieces of footage was when a table in Room 1302 literally jumped off the floor while Grant Wilson was trying to change a battery. Summation: Among the speakers at the event were: Jason Hawes and Grant Wilson from "Ghost Hunters", Patrick Burns of "Haunting Evidence", noted Demonologists John Zaffis and Adam Blai, Darkness Radio's Dave Schrader and Tim Dennis and Chris Fleming of "Dead Famous." The highlight of the event was a 4 hour investigation of the main hotel, the Manor House and the Concert Hall. During this event, we got the opportunity to investigate with each of the speakers. While we did not experience any paranormal activity in the main hotel or the concert hall, Sue and Sharon were witness to an experiment where a K-II EMF Meter was used to communicate with a possible spirit energy in Room 1302, located in The Manor House. Chris Fleming posed questions that limited the responses to either "yes" or "no" and requested that the meter fluctuate once for "no" and twice for "yes." This phenomena continued through the entire investigation of Room 1302. While we can not say with any certainty that these fluctuations were direct responses caused by a spirit entity, it was extremely compelling and we can offer no explanation as to why these readings occurred. It is interesting to note, however, that Sue was able to capture some awesome EVP during the same time period that the fluctuations were occurring. We also attended some amazing lectures, most notably Adam Blai who with honesty and class brought the reality of researching the paranormal to each of us. It was an eye opening experience as well as somewhat of a wake up call. It was a talk that I don't think anyone in that room will ever forget. Overall, we had an incredible time that weekend and met some really wonderful people. It is also accurate to say that being surrounded by the beautiful Rocky Mountains is a surreal experience. It was the chance of a lifetime for us that we wouldn't have missed for the world.
